Cancer Facts

Did You Know?

  • Today, despite amazing research progress, cancer still kills more children than any other disease. Each year cancer kills more children than asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, congenital anomalies, and AIDS, combined.
  • Every year, over 11,000 children and teenagers are diagnosed with cancer.
  • Although up to 70% of all children with cancer can now be cured, each year about 2,300 children and teenagers die from cancer.
  • Some forms of childhood cancer have proven to be so resistant that even in spite of the great research strides made most of those children die.
  • 5%-7% of all childhood malignancies are neuroblastomas.
  • About 1 in 6000 children will be diagnosed with neuroblastoma by the age of five.
  • 1 in 100,000 per year are diagnosed in the U.S.
  • The average age at diagnosis is two years old.
  • About 25% of newly diagnosed neuroblastomas are found in children under the age of one.
  • Children under the age of one have a cure rate as high as 90%.

Coping Within The Family

  • Cancer is a blow to every family it touches. How it is handled is determined, to a great extent, by how the family has functioned as a unit in the past.
  • Problems within the family can be the most difficult to handle; you cannot go home to escape them.
  • Adjusting to role changes can cause great upheavals in the way family members interact.
  • Performing too many roles at once endangers anyone's emotional well-being and ability to cope.
  • Financial burdens can also become a great source of stress to the family at this time.
  • Spiritual guidance and support can be a great source of comfort to a family or individual.
  • Professional counseling may be necessary and should not be overlooked.
